Whiplash

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is more common than one might think. It happens when a sudden force is put upon a person's head and neck in one direction and then another. This happens most often with impacts that cause a rapid acceleration and then deceleration as during car accidents and sports injuries. Whiplash is an injury that most commonly impacts the soft tissue and joints of the spine.  Recently, though, the mechanical forces that cause whiplash have also been linked to causing mild traumatic brain injuries, as well, because of the nature of the head being whipped. While both of these may not be life-threatening, they can have long-lasting and negative effects on the body. If you believe you have suffered whiplash and want the least invasive approach to get relief and regain function, you may be an optimal candidate for chiropractic care in West Monroe from Spinal Health Center.

Why Should Whiplash Be Treated Immediately?

Even though whiplash is not life-threatening, it can still have painful and debilitating impacts on the human body. Some of the more immediate and noticeable symptoms of whiplash are shoulder and neck pain, headaches, and stiffness in your neck. You may also experience fatigue, dizziness, “brain fog” and/or pain in your jaw. You may find that you have weakness, pain in your back and arms, as well as ringing in your ears. The more serious symptoms of whiplash include depression, anger, and anxiety. These could also be signs that you are suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of the accident and injuries that are not healing correctly.

How Can A Chiropractor Treat Whiplash?

Chiropractors are primary spine doctors trained to evaluate, assess, diagnose and recommend conservative treatment or make appropriate medical referrals to help you achieve optimal recovery and rehabilitation from spine injuries. There are many ways a chiropractor can provide whiplash treatment. One of the more common types of treatment by a chiropractor is spinal manipulation. This involves removing joint restrictions to restore proper balanced movement. The chiropractor will gently move your joints, either by hand or by instrument.

Spinal Health Center uses a computer-assisted percussion instrument called Impulse iQ to help comfortably loosen stiff and tight joints without initially having to use more drastic movements to realign the spine. This will reduce pressure on your injured discs and relieve the irritation to your joints and nerves that become damaged during a whiplash injury. We may also provide some gentle stretches to move the muscles that are bound and restricted. Eventually as you continue to recover we will incorporate stability exercises to strengthen those areas most affected by your trauma to prevent further damage and recurrence of symptoms.
